Terri H. Beaty, Ph.D., Genetics Research

Dr. Beaty uses statistical genetics to identify genes contributing to

risk of complex diseases, which includes most chronic diseases and birth

defects. She has a long-standing interest in birth defects, particularly

cleft lip and cleft palate. She completed her PhD in Human Genetics at

the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 1978 and has been a member of

the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of

Public Health since 1980. She is director of the concentration in

Genetic Epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology. Her NIH-funded

studies on oral clefts began in 1992 with a state wide epidemiologic

study and has expanded to international collaborations over the years.

The goal of this research is to identify genes that control risk to oral

clefts and test for interactions between these genes and environmental

risk factors.
